Before – boring hair
To say that I am boring when it comes to my hair is an understatement. Apart from regular trims, I hardly touch my mane. The last time I coloured my hair, it became an ashy brown and made me look sallow, so that was the end of my colour adventures. I like to think that I’m being “classic” yet a part of me is dying for a radical change.

I’ve been admiring the cool ombre tones of celebrities, most notably, cool cat Alexa Chung, and wondered how I’d look with blonde streaks. So, it was with excitement that I accepted my dear friend, Andrea’s offer to give me the “ombre of my dreams” at her hair salon, CINQ.
If you’ve not been to CINQ, it is a sleek space at Scotts Square where its team of 11 hairstylists cut and coif endlessly, even on a weekday! Started in 2006 at Telok Ayer with former The Hair Shop partner, Henri Leong, it has since expanded to Scotts Square in 2012 with the addition of two more partners from The Hair Shop, Vincent Lee and Leong Lim. CINQ prides itself on a one-stop beauty shop – with make-up and nail services to boot.

After a brief consultation with my stylist Vincent and colourist Cheetat, a light brown colour was selected – specifically L’Oreal Majilift 13. Cheetat explained that L’Oreal’s colour pigments are more suitable for Asian hair, especially semi-virgin, dark hair like mine as it was able to “lift” and lighten considerably. I noticed that Cheetat backcombed my hair before applying the hair dye and he explained that by doing so, my colour will look more natural. After tin-foiling the lower half of my entire head, the colour was left on for about 30 minutes before it was washed off.
Shades of ombre that have been blended to suit my skin tone
I was excited about seeing my new hair colour and am delighted with how it turned out! The ombre effect looked great and despite the colour being way lighter than my original hair, it was blended in expertly, so that my entire hairstyle looked lighter and more glamourous!
Hello fab hair!
The brown also enhanced my tanned skin and I thought it made my complexion brighter. It’s amazing what a great hair colour can do for your looks…and ego (tosses fabulous hair)!
