With Christmas round the corner, it’s time for your skin to look its best. An alternative to laser treatments and facials is a skincare option called Dermaroller therapy.

Although Dermaroller devices, also known as micro-needling devices, vary a bit, they all look similar to one another. The hand pieces are usually cylindrical “rollers” that have tiny needles embedded into them at set intervals. Each micro-needling device might have hundreds of those little needles poking out of its surface.
How a Dermaroller Improves Skin Health
A Dermaroller treatment improves skin health because it damages the skin. That might sound silly, but it’s true. When the device is rolled over a section of skin, it pokes tiny holes in the skin’s surface. That’s what stimulates the body to make more collagen, along with other healthy proteins and components. Those components all work together to repair the skin cells, eventually giving the patient skin that looks younger and healthier.
Of course, aesthetic laser equipment is also capable of treating your skin in a similar way. However, there are some major differences in how the procedures are performed. That means that some people are better off having laser treatment, while others receive better results from Dermaroller.
Micro-Needling Can be Done Anywhere
One important thing to know about Dermaroller is that the micro-needling process doesn’t have to be done in a clinical setting. There are actually home kits you can use to do it yourself. They sometimes cost as little as $30. So, if you’re on a tight budget, you might want to try treating the problem yourself at home. However, you will always see better, and possibly faster, results by having the procedure done professionally.
Another reason that you might want to think twice about home treatment is that professional treatments can be not only more powerful, but also more accurate and less risky. Although, as long as you follow the directions that come with the home kit, you shouldn’t experience too many problems.
What Happens During Dermaroller Treatment
Regardless of whether you treat yourself or go to a clinic, the first part of the Dermaroller process should be cleaning the section of skin that you want to treat. It’s important for the area to be sterile. Next, a topical anesthetic will need to be applied in order to numb the area and reduce discomfort during the procedure. After that the hand-held tool needs to be rolled across the area several times.
Once the tool has been rolled across the skin, it’s likely that the skin will start to bleed or ooze. That can be controlled with gauze. The next step after that is to simply keep the area clean, sterilized, and hydrated until it fully heals.
Obviously, micro-needling is not your only treatment option for skin problems, and it may not be the most comfortable option for you, especially if you have a fear of needles. However, if needles don’t bother you, it might just be the answer you need to reestablish a healthier look. Just be sure to check on all of your options before you make a final decision about whether or not to undergo micro-needling at home or in a local clinic.
